Get StartedSAWA Wanawake Tanzania (SAWA) is a women-led non-governmental, non-partisan, non-racial, and non-profit organization established in the Morogoro region. The organization is legally registered under the Non-Governmental Organizations Act, No. 24 of 2002, with registration number 00NGO/R/0221.
SAWA Wanawake Tanzania (SAWA) was founded in 1996 by 12 widowed women who were facing economic hardship and social vulnerability after the loss of their husbands. United by a shared desire for dignity, independence, and a better future for their children, they began as a small self-help group practicing savings and lending to support one another in times of need.
SAWA started as a simple mutual support initiative gradually grew into a broader vision for community transformation. Realizing that lasting change begins with children, the women established an inclusive model school to provide quality early learning for children from vulnerable backgrounds, including those at risk of exclusion.
From these humble beginnings, SAWA has evolved into a community-based organization focused on Early childhood Development, Basic quality and inclusive education, women and girls economic empowerment. Guided by values of solidarity, resilience, and collective growth, SAWA continues to create opportunities for women, children, and families to thrive across Tanzania.
